Cool feature added to Litter Robot – Aug 14, 2009
My husband added a cool feature to our Litter-Robot. He has most of our house controlled using Insteon switches, receptacles, and sensors connected to a computer running Indigo home automation software. Lights turn on and off automatically and we can control most devices from an iPhone even when not at home.
We have 2 cats that use Litter-Robot. We noticed that after a certain number of uses, the collection tray would be ready to dump. Using these observations, he connected a sensor to the Litter-Robot that tracks the number of times it rotates. He then set the Indigo software to track this activity and after a certain number of rotations…it sends email to my computer and text mail to my cellphone reminding me that the tray is ready to dump. Great for when we’re busy and on-the-go. It also controls a small van built into a vent that turns on and then off after a cat has used the Litter-Robot.
My husband’s next endeavor is to build a trap door into the bottom of the unit and dump litter into a holding bin in out basement. Hope it works…

Oh wow…. you sound like you have a clone of my husband!
I read your comments to him and he cracked up! I can’t even find a light switch in our house anymore, I use the iPhone to turn on and off everything using the same system running on Macintosh. I might even try the Litter Robot now! Thanks for the fun idea to have our Indigo system notify me of my “duties”
