2017 National Pet Week is May 7-13!
National Pet Week is a great time to place your pets front and center. In addition to giving them some extra attention, it’s also a great time to reflect on how you provide a healthy and satisfying lifestyle for your pet.
It’s easy to get in a rut and intend to improve one thing or another, but put it off just a little while longer. Well, now is the time! Whether you’ve been meaning to research better food, refresh the toy basket, or just add some excitement to your pet’s life, get it done this May 7th through 13th! Here are five more ways to shake things up.
Take your cat on the road!
Nothing will get you out of a rut like taking your cat on a road trip adventure! You may be thinking something along the lines of, “are you kidding, no way, not with my cat,” and, well, you might be right. Or, you just might be proved wrong; you might be amazed at how the experience brings your cat out of its shell. The stimulation of the open road (the sights, the smells, the sounds) from the safe, predictable enclosure of the car allows your cat to stay comfortable while having new experiences. Read more to get a jump start on planning your kitty getaway.
Whatever makes your cat unique—capture it!
Share your kitty love on social media or, dare I say it, have some prints made to hang on your wall. Already a frequent photo snapper? Up your game with these tips from pet expert Kristen Levine.
Nothing changes the routine more than adding to the family—for better or worse. Getting the introduction right can facilitate a more positive relationship more quickly. Here’s how to do it right!
Keep Track of Your Favorite Feline
Whether your cat is strictly kept indoors or let outside, microchipping is a good way to identify you as the owner if your kitty goes walkabout. Learn about the benefits and limitations here:
Prepare Yourself to Help Unowned Cats
Unfortunately, not all kitties are pets with wonderful parents like you. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help a stray without going as far as adopting each one you come across. Learn how to distinguish a feral from a stray cat, and do what you can to help in either situation.
Keep Your Cat Purring
Take an interest in your pet! The more you know about your feline friend, the better able you are to nurture the good stuff and reduce the bad stuff. If you think you know what purring is all about, think again.

About National Pet Week
National Pet Week® is always observed the first full week in May. Created in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, National Pet Week is dedicated to celebrating America’s more than 200 million pets that enrich our lives each and every day and encourage responsible pet care every day of the year.
Whether companion, comedian, confidant or protector, our pets are always there for us and don’t ask for much in return. National Pet Week® celebrates this bond and encourages pet owners to be certain they provide their best friends with all they need for a happy, healthy life every week of the year. Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, school groups and communities host a variety of fun and informative events throughout the week.
