Litter-Robot 4: Ongoing maintenance
Empty the waste drawer
Empty the waste drawer when indicated by the light bar flashing blue on the control panel. How often you will need to empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. For two average-sized cats, twice per week is typical. For a single cat, once per week is usually sufficient.

You can use Litter-Robot custom-fit waste drawer liners or any 8-13-gallon (30-49L) trash bags.
White bags work best.
Please note that waste level readings may be inaccurate when using a dark bag, especially when the drawer is empty. As clumps start to collect in the drawer, the readings will become more accurate. For the most precise waste level readings and a seamless experience, including drawstrings for easy disposal, we highly recommend using Litter-Robot Waste Drawer Liners.
- Open a new waste drawer liner or bag.

- Wrap the edges of the waste drawer liner over the rim of the waste drawer.

- Push the remainder of the bag into the bottom of the waste drawer and then slide the waste drawer closed. Make sure the bag does not come up past the top of the sides of the waste drawer, which can result in a false flashing blue "drawer full" light on the control panel.

- Press the Reset button to zero the weight sensors.
Add litter as needed
Check the litter level once per week or each time you empty the waste drawer. Add litter until it is just below the raised MAX fill line inside the globe, and be careful not to overfill it to avoid wasting litter.

Press the Reset button any time you affect the weight or placement of the unit (including emptying the waste drawer, adding or removing litter, or cleaning or moving the unit), to ensure the weight sensors will detect your cat and cycle properly.

How often will I need to empty Litter-Robot's waste drawer?
Thanks to Litter-Robot's larger waste drawer, you may only need to empty the waste drawer as low as once every two weeks. Ultimately, this depends on the number and size of your cats.
Let's dive into the cleaning frequency of a self-cleaning litter box like Litter-Robot:
| Number of cats | 1 cat | 2 cats | 3 cats | 4 cats |
| Empty the waste drawer | Every 2 weeks | Every week | Twice per week | Every other day |
| Spot cleaning | Every month | Every 2 weeks | Every other week | Every week |
| Deep cleaning | Every 3 months | Every 2-3 months | Every other month | Every month |
How often do I need to add litter to Litter-Robot?
We also recommend checking the litter level against the raised fill line (on the black rubber liner of the globe) each time you empty the waste drawer, which is about once per week for a single cat or twice for multiple cats. Be careful not to overfill the globe.
Litter-Robot uses litter very efficiently since the patented sifting system only removes the clumps. Litter-Robot 4 features real-time tracking of litter levels, so the Whisker app can alert you when to add more litter to the globe. And by adding a LitterHopper accessory, you'll hardly ever have to refill litter—LitterHopper does it for you!
