Over 95% of cats acclimate to Litter-Robot*, and most begin using it within a few days to a week. (*Based on stated reasons for customer returns of Litter-Robot 4 and 3 over a one-year period). It's natural for some cats to be initially uncertain or wary of new objects in their territory. Litter-Robot 4 is designed to be as cat-friendly as possible, featuring QuietSift® technology that minimizes noise during the cleaning cycle. The cleaning cycle won’t begin until minutes after your cat has exited the automatic litter box, and you can extend the delay up to 30 minutes for skittish cats.

To ease the transition, place Litter-Robot where the old litter box was and, for a short time, keep both nearby. Mixing a cup of used litter into the clean litter in the Litter-Robot helps provide a familiar scent. You can also leave Litter-Robot turned off until your cat has tried it. With these steps—and a little patience—most cats adapt quickly, especially if they’re already used to a covered litter box. Learn more about acclimating your cat.

Litter-Robot 4 is suitable for cats that weigh 3-25 lbs, including large breeds like Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest cats, making it one of the best litter boxes for large cats. With an entryway width of 15.75’’ and an interior height of 16.5”, almost any domestic cat can fit comfortably inside the globe.

Yes. Kittens that weigh at least 3 lbs can safely use Litter-Robot 4 in automatic mode. The unit uses laser and weight sensor technology to detect when your cat enters and exits the globe, which then triggers the countdown timer and cleaning cycle.

For kittens under 3 lbs, we recommend using your Litter-Robot in "semi-automatic" mode to keep your kitten safe and relieve you from litter box scooping. For "semi-automatic" mode, leave Litter-Robot powered off or unplugged. When you see your kitten has used it, wait about 7 minutes for the waste to clump, then power it on. Litter-Robot will automatically perform a clean cycle. Afterward, power it off again. Continue this supervised, semi-automatic mode until your kittens have reached 3 lbs and can reliably activate the weight sensors.

Because waste is promptly removed and contained in the base, typical litter box odors will be significantly reduced with Litter-Robot. Litter-Robot 4 features a sealed waste drawer and Carbon Filter to reduce odors. You can opt to combine the Carbon Filter with OdorTrap Packs to eliminate litter box odors through natural chemistry. We also recommend using an unscented, all-natural litter like GreatLitter to help with odor control.

Replace the Waste Drawer Liner whenever you need to empty the waste drawer. How often you empty the waste drawer depends on the number and size of your cats. You may only need to empty the Litter-Robot 4 waste drawer as low as once every 8 days. For optimal odor absorption, we recommend replacing the Carbon Filter and OdorTrap® Packs every 2-4 weeks, but replacement frequency is up to you and your cats' usage patterns.

The best litter for Litter-Robot is clumping clay litter. We recommend a high-quality, standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter, such as GreatLitter. Some silica gel litter beads and crystals can also be used with Litter-Robot, as long as they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white-colored litter (most often seen in crystal litter) may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) accuracy in Litter-Robot 4 and are therefore not recommended. Alternative, plant-based litters typically do not work with Litter-Robot as these may not be filtered properly through the sifting system. Litters that do not work in Litter-Robot are the strictly absorbent, non-clumping or loose-clumping litters, newspaper-based litters, and absorbent wood pellet litter.

Yes. However, SmartScale® technology to record cat weight is most accurate on a firm surface, not carpeting. If you plan to use Litter-Robot 4 on carpet that's 3mm+ thick or on uneven flooring, you can improve the accuracy of SmartScale® weight readings by purchasing our specially designed Carpet Tray that sits between the unit and the floor. The Carpet Tray is not required for Litter-Robot 4 to function.
