Scaredy-cat?
No problem
These tried-and-true methods will help your cat use Litter-Robot in no time.
Most cats switch to Litter-Robot successfully
1. Leave Litter-Robot turned off
Leave Litter-Robot turned off to avoid possibly startling cats while they’re adjusting to it as their new litter box. Once you notice that your cats have used Litter-Robot, turn it on for a clean cycle. Encourage your cats to be present, so they can observe the motion and become familiar with the sound of Litter-Robot while you’re there to reassure them.
2. Place Litter-Robot next to the old litter box
Don’t throw the old litter box away yet and don't change the litter you are using unless it is not compatible with Litter-Robot. Add a scoop of the old litter to the new litter in Litter-Robot to provide a familiar scent for your cats. Allow your cat to use both boxes for a period of time, slowly reducing the frequency of cleaning the old box until your cat feels comfortable relying solely on Litter-Robot. Cats prefer a clean place to go, so this should motivate your cat to try Litter-Robot.
3. Reward interactions with Litter-Robot
If your cat shows no interest, entice them to approach Litter-Robot by using some catnip or treats. Place treats on the step or around Litter-Robot so your cat associates rewards with the new litter box. Once your cats have used Litter-Robot, be sure to reward them with treats, play sessions, and cuddles.
4. Remove the Litter-Robot fence or shield
For some cats, visibility is important. Start by removing the Litter-Robot fence or shield to help them feel more comfortable approaching and entering Litter-Robot. You can reattach it once they’re used to the new setup.
5. Consider using the Litter-Robot Ramp
Consider using the Litter-Robot Ramp for easy access. This can be particularly helpful for older cats or those with mobility concerns and can give your cats an additional incentive to explore Litter-Robot. Depending on how your cat behaves, you may want to remove the ramp and reattach it once they’re used to the new setup.
6. Gradually introduce the automated feature
When your cat starts using Litter-Robot regularly, introduce the automated feature. Turn Litter-Robot on and let them observe from a safe distance. Speak calmly to reassure them as they watch it cycle. Curiosity will soon outweigh any initial fears. Please note that your cat needs to weigh at least 3 pounds for Litter-Robot 4 and 5 pounds for Litter-Robot 3 to use automatic mode.
7. Use litter attractant
In some cases, the transition may require more convincing. If you’re at an impass, it may be worth trying litter attractant as it is designed to garner cat's attention. Many users have found a quick transition with only a few cups!
8. Be patient and adapt your strategy
Every cat is unique. Adjust these steps based on your cat's behavior and comfort level. Patience is key. With time, encouragement, and a little bit of love, your cat will soon embrace their new Litter-Robot.

Whisker recommends closely monitoring the transition of your cat to their new Litter-Robot. As with any litter box transition, cats can have side effects, such as irregular use, not using the litter box, and more. It is best practice, and our recommendation, to monitor this closely until your cat has smoothly transitioned to their new litter box.
